You may be wondering what the difference is between our Grechka and all the other buckwheat that you can currently buy in the shops.
First of all, let us tell you a bit about buckwheat. Despite its name, buckwheat contains zero wheat and is actually a seed from a beautiful flower.
Buckwheat is farmed in the East and has been cultivated for more than 2000 years! Although referred to as a grain, buckwheat, like quinoa and amaranth, is actually a seed or 'pseudo-grain'.
When this beautiful flower is harvested it is processed in a factory to extract the kernel and remove the husk. Raw (green) buckwheat does not go through a heating process, however it does not taste as good as parboiled. Our Grechka goes through a steaming process, which helps to preserve nutrients and improve the taste. Some manufacturers roast buckwheat. This method leaves the buckwheat looking better, but retains few nutrients and doesn’t taste as good as parboiled. So, Grechka is a nutritional powerhouse with a mild nutty flavour and is highly versatile - you can use buckwheat as the base for any dish! Check out our website for more recipes.
We work exclusively with one manufacturer. We know the production process, which is nearly all manually done and work closely with the people who produce it. Since part of the process is done manually and lovingly by the manufacturer, it may still contain some pieces of husk, which is not bad at all, simply rinse the buckwheat before cooking.
